Well, that's the point of reading literature closely. Of course I'm no expert and I certainly haven't read much research on the matter so I could just be pulling that guess out my ass and have it all wrong, and since everyone has their own experience who knows if there's even a rule that fits us all. I don't think I could have the same retention without the subvocalization. Conversely, I had to read dozens of pieces-novels and essays and stories and speeches and articles and such-over the past semester (english major, hist minor), nearly all of which I can remember enough to summarize and provide important quotations if you asked. And I've found retention and internalization of text over a long period of time to be one of the most rewarding results of reading.Į.g., yes I comprehended all the words of the comments I just sped-read using this method, but if you ask me now to give you the "highlights" I'll be much fuzzier than if I'd allowed my natural subvocalization to occur. I'll say that while this and other methods to reduce subvocalization are in general effective in that if you implement them you are able to read much faster and even comprehend the words as you read them, it's my experience (and I suspect there may be evidence for this, but as of now it's just an opinionated hunch) that retention suffers dramatically.
